Great Scanner January 7, 2009 This scanner makes awesome pictures. I bought it to scan old family photos and chose this scanner because of the higher resolution. It shows amazing detail and doesn't lose any quality of the photo. I highly recommend this scanner.
EPSON PERFECTION V300 PERFECT SO FAR January 6, 2009 I got this scanner to digitize some of my thousands of slides, some up to 60 years old. It had been frustrating to see slide scanners for use with PCs but not for Macs. So I was delighted to read about this Epson. Set-up easy; instructions clear. I started using it 4 days ago and have scanned over 300 slides. Scanned pictures are very good. Process is slow, doing only 4 slides at a time but while waiting, it gives me a chance to get caught up on my reading. Takes about 30 seconds for the preview scan, a bit of time to make adjustments (brightness, etc.) if necessary, and about 5 minutes for the final scanning. Happy with my purchase.
Careful about purchasing from BuyNow December 24, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is more to do with the seller than the product so ignore the stars, but be careful about purchasing this from BuyNow. I bought it, and paid nearly $30.00 for expedited shipping so it would arrive by the 23rd. It wasn't sent via expedited shipping and as of Christmas eve, it still hasn't arrived. It's a pretty frustrating Christmas with one of the major gifts not expected to arrive until possibly the 29th.
I would have left this in the seller review area, but made a mistake, redacted the initial review, and apparently you don't get to make another with Amazon. Anyways, think twice about buying this from BuyNow.
Great Value in a Dying Segment December 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It seems that standalone scanners aren't very popular anymore. People are flocking to the all-in-one scanners (I admit I have one of those also). However the stand alone scanners seem to still be better quality.
- This scanner is fast. 5-6 years ago I had a scanner and everytime you'd hid scan, it would lock up the computer, warm up for 5-10 seconds, and then slowly scan the item. Since this one is LED based, as soon as you hit scan it starts, and it goes across fast, just a few seconds.
- The lid. Not only does it easily fold flat, it also stores your negative scanner tool. It also allows for thick items to be scanned with it's special hinge. This means instead of having weird background light, it should be even.
- It's Mac compatible! I popped in the CD expecting no mac compatibility on the cd, or very little. In fact it installs everything you need it to work. I don't believe the buttons work on it (although there is probably some easy fix for that), but all the software is included. It doesn't look very mac'ish, and uses some ugly methods of installing the software, but the point is that it works.
Unfortunately for this product, it's kind of stuck in the middle. It's better than the All-in-One scanner, but it's also not as good as the professional scanners. Sure it does negative scanning, and a few other things, but that too is dying, replaced by digital photography. If you still have a need for a decent standalone scanner, this one seems to be of great value.
Good low cost solution December 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this scanner for a few days now and use it exclusively for scanning 35mm negatives. It does a pretty good job but not like an expensive dedicated film scanner would do. Also, the darker the negative (low light) the more grain will appear in the scan requiring some Photoshop filters. Of course the scan will depend greatly on the quality of the camera lens used to take the shot, and of course the operator. About the only special setting I use right now is color correction and leave everything else to Photoshop so I cannot comment on how well the various other settings like grain reduction and histogram work.
Final analysis: this is a good basic machine but if you want more than 5x7 prints dont expect great quality without spending some time enhancing the scans. Read the 'how-to" manual and make sure your negatives are very clean on both sides.
