Amazon.com Product Description
Take a load off your shoulders when you're racing for your plane with the sleekly designed and ultra-portable Sony Vaio VGN-TX750P/B notebook PC, which weighs just an amazing 2.76 pounds. It also features integrated wireless Wide Area Network (WAN) technology to keep you connected and productive when away from your workstation and a dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner with Click to DVD software, enabling you to create high-quality, customized DVDs for presentations or home movies. It also has an 11.1-inch widescreen LCD with XBRITE technology, 1.2 GHz ultra-low voltage Pentium M processor, 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (1.5 GB maximum), a battery life of between 4 and 7.5 hours, Bluetooth wireless capability (for connecting to peripherals such as PDAs, cell phones, and printers), a multi-format memory card reader, and a wide assortment of pre-loaded software titles.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs--and especially for notebooks of this small size. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library.
  • Processor: The Intel Pentium M Processor Ultra Low Voltage 753 (1.20 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB) delivers outstanding mobile performance and low-power enhancements for sleeker, lighter notebook designs. The 1.2 GHz clock speed can be misleading--for most tasks, this processor will be faster than a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4-M. This older processor sits at the bottom of the current spectrum for this processor class (as of March 2006).
  • Memory: The VGN-TX750P/B has two memory slots and comes loaded with 512 MB of DDR SDRAM (PC3200, 400 MHz DDR RAM; 1 x 512 MB), and it can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. For both standard, single-layer DVD-R and DVD+R discs, it has a 4x write, while double-layer DVD+R discs have a a 2.4x write speed. Rewritable DVD+RW discs write at 2.4x while DVD-RW write at 2x. For CDs, it has a 24x write/10x rewrite speed. It also has a separate DVD-ROM drive with 8x DVD read speed and 24x CD read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has an 82-key keyboard with 1.7mm stroke and 17mm pitch and an electrostatic touchpad.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 11.1-inch XBRITE LCD has a resolution of 1368 x 768 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Sony's Smart Display Sensor feature instantly adjusts resolution when you connect to a display or projector. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. The integrated audio card provides 16-bit stereo sound via the built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The VGN-TX750P/B features Sony's SmartWi technology, which seamlessly integrates wireless Wide Area Network (WAN), 802.11b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies, enabling you to toggle among your wireless connectivity options depending on your surroundings. With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both USB 2.0 and iLink (FireWire):

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 1 headphone jack
  • 1 microphone jack
  • Port replicator connector
  • Memory card slot, compatible with Memory Stick and Memory Stick DUO media with MagicGate functionality and Secure Digital Media (SD)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). The optional Port Replicator unit also includes 3 additional USB 2.0, VGA, RJ-45, and parallel ports.

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: Click to DVD (DVD creation), SonicStage (digital music), SonicStage Mastering Studio (with MP3 encoder), Vaio Media (network file sharing), DVgate Plus (digital video), and Image Converter (for PSP transfer). Other preloaded software includes Quicken 2005 New User Edition, Microsoft Works 8.5 (with word processing, spreadsheet, and calendar), Norton Internet Security (with 90-day subscription), Intervideo WinDVD, Roxio DigitalMedia SE, Adobe Photoshop Album starter edition, and TrendMicro Anti-Spyware (30-day trial).

Dimensions and Weight
Amazingly small and light, the VGN-TX750P/B weighs 2.76 pounds with standard battery and measures 10.7 x 1.12 x 7.7 inches (WxHxD).

Power
It's powered by the VGP-BPS5 lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which produces a battery life of between 4 and 7.5 hours.

What's in the Box
This package contains the VGN-TX750P/B notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, Cingular Wireless SIM card, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty, and Sony offers 1-year of toll-free telephone technical assistance.

5 out of 5 stars I don't miss a desktop/bigger laptop   February 26, 2007
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

I don't think there is any other computer in the market with this weight that comes with a DVD/CDRW. Also, the battery life is amazing! I have been able to use it for up to 10 hrs.

I used to think I wouldn't be able to work with a resolution lower than SXGA+, but it took me only a few days to get used to this laptop's resolution. The fact that is wide-screen helps a lot for having two applications next to each other.

I use it mainly for web development, email/browsing and writing. I am able to run Apache, MySQL and PHP quite well. It can be sluggish when using high-performance apps.

My only complain is that it doesn't come with a built-in microphone. Also, I reinstalled the OS using the installation DVDs (which you need to create ) and it didn't seem to re-create the small partition with the software to use the feature that lets you play DVDs without booting the OS.

5 out of 5 stars Sony TX   February 20, 2007

Excellent purchase - I was looking for a lightweight computer with good battery life, a large memory and optical drive. The TX seemed to be the only good option - every other ultra lightweight computer was missing something or was just too expensive (ie Toughbook). I would recommend this computer - the only thing I would change for other users might be a faster processor because it slows down a bit when multi-tasking.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Itty-Bitty Laptop   January 2, 2007
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

It is undeniable that Sony makes a good (but expensive) laptop. The TX750 meets my needs and looks great. The standard battery life is decent, expect around 4 hours under normal circumstances. The extended battery will last for maybe 7, but it adds a significant amount of weight and bulk to the laptop. The newer TX Vaios have a longer standard battery life and some other upgraded features, but cost a few hundred more. It's up to you. I primarily use this laptop for school, so it's more than sufficient as the pricey, glorified word processor I use it as.

The screen is bright and crisp. I haven't really watched many videos on it, but so far, everything looks great. Performance meets expectations for the price and specs. Windows loads fairly fast and I haven't had too many problems with programs freezing up. The charcoal graphite lid is a cool touch, but after lugging it around for a few months in my school bag, it has started to get scuffed and a bit unsightly looking. I recommend a protective case if you plan on abusing it at all. The keyboard can be a little tough to read in dim lighting due to the black on silver lettering, but it isn't that big a deal to me.

Overall, I would say the TX750 delivers pretty good bang for the buck, but power users may prefer one of the newer releases for the added memory and battery performance. The price of this model has come down a bit since I bought mine, so I would say it is the perfect choice for students or casual traveler users.

5 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE this computer!   August 10, 2006
14 out of 17 found this review helpful

I bought this little laptop because I have a large "desktop replacement" 17" widescreen also which has become too large to bring to meetings, classes or seminars I may go to and I noticed many other executives using this Sony TX model so when I received it I was pleasantly surprised at the weight, the outstanding color and brightness and I get tons of comments on how practical and helpful it is in meetings! I bought another one recently for my husband as I originally bought him a Sony UX which is too small and not very practical which I'm now returning and he absolutely loves his Sony TX too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You can get add-on memory directly from [...] for a great price too!

5 out of 5 stars Great portable computer   August 1, 2006

I got this computer about a week ago and I absolutely love it! It is incredibly small while still being practical. Probably not a great computer for anyone with limited vision, but otherwise perfect. Great for anyone who needs to take their computer with then without adding a ton of weight. Perfect for students to take to class. Highly recomended.
