Amazon.com Product Description Sony's SAT-HD300 DIRECTV high-definition satellite receiver is your access point to hundreds of channels of DIRECTV digital satellite programming--and your gateway into the world of high-definition video. The receiver can output NTSC and ATSC (HD) video signals in many formats--like 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i--and a couple of them simultaneously. Want to record SD (standard definition) video to your VCR or DVR via composite- or S-video while watching a different channel in full 1080i HDTV? Now you can. The unit's output jacks include a DVI-HDTV interface for a direct-digital connection with a compatible monitor), RGB for your PC monitor, as well as component-, composite-, and S-video. An optical digital-audio output lets you route the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround signals accompanying select programs to a compatible audio/video receiver and multichannel speaker system for spacious, detailed listening. Use DIRECTV's Advanced Program Guide (APG) for choosing local ATSC and NTSC program data up to seven days in advance. A supplied VCR controller is a perfect interface for your taping needs, and the system also features a 20-event reminder. Cine-Zoom aspect-ratio setting offers 16 control steps so you can tailor your programming to fit your TV screen's native aspect ratio (usually either 4:3 or widescreen 16:9). Multifreeze control allows zoom and pan of frozen digital video source images. Other great features include a DIRECTV access-card slot/door and reset button on the front panel, quick access to signal-strength meter, parental control with V-Chip, a front-panel display window, keyword search with text prediction, and favorite-channel list. The receiver comes with a Sony universal Remote Commander remote control (IR/RF). Full enjoyment of the SAT-HD300 does require a fair amount of ancillary hardware and services, namely an installed DIRECTV satellite dish, a DIRECTV Service subscription, and use of a high-definition or HD-ready television or monitor. But the receiver does support over-air reception of HD broadcasts, and its output can be scaled to just about any video format. So, technically, even if you don't have DIRECTV Service, and even if you're using a standard-definition 27-inch CRT television, you could still enjoy SD viewing of off-air HDTV, right out of the box. You could also plug a cable feed into the receiver and use it as a channel switcher/VCR controller. But unless you're planning to subscribe to DIRECTV and/or upgrade to an HD-ready TV, there's little point in using the SAT-HD300. What's in the Box DTV receiver, DVI cable, component-video cable, S-video cable, A/V cable, RF cable(2), an RJ-11 telephone cable, a VCR controller, a remote control, remote batteries, and a user's manual.
Product Description Sony's SAT-HD300 DirecTV High Definition Satellite Receiver gives you options... good ones. Versatile and stylish, this receiver features a number of video outputs, including DVI-HDTV Interface, RGB, V/Pb/Pr, Composite and S-Video. It has an Advanced Program Guide (APG) - Local ATSC and NTSC Program Data, a DVI-HDTV Interface (Cable Supplied), Dolby Digital Pass-through, up to 7 Days of Advanced Program Guide from DirecTV Service, and a 20 Event Reminder. Keep a handle on your world with Parental Control with V Chip, Front Panel Display Window, Keyword Search with Text Prediction and Favorite Channel List.

Sony Receiver for Directv September 6, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This unit totally surpasses the garbage that Directv gives you in every way.I love my Sony receivers!
Sony Sat - HD300 August 4, 2005 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
We purchased this unit 18 months ago. The unit has failed twice. Sony replaced the unit the first time, post warranty, with only a shipping charge of $70. The second time I was instructed to take it to a local repair, $40 analysis, before repair. Seems that for over $600 there should be a better life expectancy. If you buy this unit, be sure to get an extended warranty. Many features on the non HD system far exceed the features on this unit.
Updated firmware can fix your problem...Great channels otherwise April 2, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Had mine almost a year. Since I have yet to bring it in to have the firmware updated, I am living with the issues it gives me for now.
Issues include some picture drop outs on weaker signals. Timer recording NOT switching to the proper channels. I actually witnessed it going offline to reset itself. That is a new issue. I wonder if the update is being broadcasted and causing the reset. Since there is no auto-time setting, I have to reset the time if the power drops momentarily, or when it resets.
Those issues should be moot once I get the firmware upgraded. Aside from that, running the s-video to a regular dvd-recorder yields the BEST recording quality imaginable - though not HD.
The picture and sound is great and I can't imagine my Sony TV without this gem of a box. But not having the bugs worked out before hitting the market is annoying. So is the lack of firewire output. Great remote control and easy to setup.
I live in Northern NJ and use the Zenith ZHDTV1 HDTV/UHF Digital Indoor Antenna for the FREE over-the-air HD channels. I get 2.1, 4.1, 4.2 (Weather plus), 4.4, 5.1, 5.2 (ch 9 @ 480p), 7.1, 7.2 (480p), 9.1, 9.2 (ch 5 @ 480p), 11.1, 11.2 & PBS 13.1, 13.2, 13.3. Receives some UHF channels in digital as well.
I am one of the last hold outs who refuses to pay for TV. The extra digital channels (4.2, 7.2, 13.x) are great. IT IS LIKE HAVING A MINI-CABLE SUBSCRIPTION FOR FREE.
Even if you DON'T have a HDTV, a digital box will connect to a conventional tv and give you DVD quality, or better.
What a turkey- even at today's prices December 25, 2004 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I got my SAT-HD300 back when it was brand new, and paid $800 for the unit- after the Sony employee discount!
It functions well enough as an ATSC and DirecTV reciever- but a glaring omission is 1394 FireWire outputs- making the unit useless if you're considering a DVHS deck. http://169time.com/ will mod the unit to output firewire, but at a huge additional cost.
The best choice if you own other Sony gear July 5, 2004 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I don't disagree with some of the other complaints, but the problems are, in my opinion, overshadowed by the advantages if you own a Sony TV and receiver. The remote works perfectly with my HDTV monitor and receiver. I have used HD DirecTV receivers from Samsung and Hughes and found them lacking.
